Instructor Gary is currently the chief instructor of PTK-SMF Peninsula and is an active member of Tuhon Tim Waid's Certified Professional Instructors (CPI) Program. He was introduced to the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali System and started training with Guro Ferd in 2011.
Gary started his formal training in Martial Arts in 1980 at the age of 10 in American Kickboxing. Over the years he has trained in Thai, Japanese and Chinese systems and has earned several instructor level ranks and certifications. In 2010 Gary and his family moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area and has since focused on Filipino Martial Arts; specifically close-quarter blade fighting. His prior exposure to Filipino martial arts was from family and friends, who studied various Kali, Arnis and Escrima systems, and would informally teach him techniques.
At a young age, Joseph was captivated and excited about martial movements and the mindset that accompanies them. With no formal in-school training, just highly dedicated friends who were willing to teach, Joseph soaked up whatever was given. This gave Joseph the opportunity to explore many different styles like; Aikido, Thai boxing and Jiu-Jitsu. In the late 90’s, Joseph began his serious formal training under the tutelage of Grandmaster Chan Kam Shing. Due to location changes, Joseph was wandering without a teacher.
Years later he found the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali System and after falling in love with this practical art, he spent the last 6 years training with Guro Ferd. Joe serves as co-instructor with Instructor Gary.
"Our training is hard, demanding, physical, but ultimately very rewarding - you WILL become competent in fighting." - Tuhon Tim Waid.
Ferdinand Terado, aka Ferd is the founder of PTK-SMF Peninsula and is a certified Guro in the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali System under Tuhon Tim Waid. He is the leading PTK-SMF Certified Professional Instructor (CPI) in the San Francisco Bay and is listed on the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali Global Organization website's Instructors directory. Ferd spearheaded the PTK-SMF Magkatipunan Tradition and is considered to be the standard bearer of the PTK-SMF professional ideology in the San Francisco Bay.
OTHER MARTIAL ART BACKGROUND
Ferd began his martial arts education at 17 years old in Okinawan Goju-ryu karate. Afterwards, he dabbled in other martial art systems such as Hung Gar Gung-Fu, Muay Thai and Capoeira. His first exposure to Filipino martial arts was in the art of Kali-Ilustrisimo and a hybrid style called The Defensor Method, which is comprised of Serrada Escrima, Silat and of course Pekiti-Tirsia among others. After moving to the San Francisco Bay, he trained briefly in Jeet Kune Do and Inosanto/Lacoste Kali before finally choosing to train exclusively in Pekiti-Tirsia Kali.
"This class is a fantastic opportunity. Ferd provides not only clear and detailed explanations for all skill levels but historical and cultural background about the techiques and weapons presented. Content includes smart foot work; stick techniques modeled on sword play; knife practice; and open hand drills. Each topic seems to flow naturally into the next, linked with consistent themes that included edge awareness and control, proper grip, understanding impact, mobility, gauging distance, situational awareness, and more. The sheltered park is a great place to meet and workout. The class is focused with a steady pace, but comfortable with engaging presentation. Ferd brings patience, creativity, and humor to the lessons and moves the content along rapidly. By the middle of the first class Ferd had us doing light sparring. I highly recommend this group to anyone curious about Filipino martial arts or who just wants to learn new and exciting combat techniques."

"Great workout! The weather was great, a lot of one on one. We covered footwork, fixed blade and the last 30 minutes we covered the karambit ... which open my eyes on this small blade... I will be there next week. Thank you Ferd ."
- Bernie N., San Leandro, CA.
First, thank you for the invite; I had a blast today. I also want to properly recognize you for doing a great job in organizing and hosting the FIRST Bay area Magkatipunan PTK event. Members from several local branches came together, under the auspices of the PTK Global Organization and embraced the spirit of the PTK brotherhood. We shared our experiences, supported and coached each participant and everyone walked away better practitioners. The accommodations were picture perfect and the weather couldn't be better. Everyone learned something today and I was no exception. These was no room for egos, no shame in getting cracked, whacked and smacked as we all dished it out and received it with equal enthusiasm - a true learning laboratory.
I know I walked away today better than when I arrived. It would not have happened without your action FERD. YOU made the words and thoughts come to reality... YOU made this event happen. The Bay area has a lot of talent and you are absolutely correct in uniting us. Hopefully, we will have even more participation at the next gathering. Let's all continue to grow stronger, faster, better. It's all theory until you can prove it and put it to use. PTK all the way! Great job Ferd and great job to all who participated!"

"Hello Ferd. I'm checking in to say that the training has been top notch and has really inspired my interest in Pekiti Tirsia Kali. The group of people I have the opportunity to train with seem very competent but approachable and welcoming, and I appreciate that... you have a new consistent student who would really like to learn this system, be trained, and pushed."
- Adam L., Redwood City, CA.

- Robert Castro, San Francisco, CA.

"After training for many years in other martial styles, I was looking for something that emphasized footwork AND mechanics, as well as having offense/counter-offense mindset. Guro Ferd is an effective and patient instructor of PTK-SMF. The material is on point. He runs an easy-going class. Everybody is super friendly and supports each other...just a good vibe. The training facility is clean and kept in great condition. Did I mention that it's an excellent workout?
I am enjoying my training with the group and I look forward to training with Ferd and the gang for many years to come. Oh, and the unexpected bonus for me was learning that one of the students and I work within two blocks of each other. So now we go to a local park and train for an hour during lunch, on our no-class days! I highly recommend PTK-SMF Peninsula. Galang."

Save My Life Before I Die
By Mataas Na Guro Dino Martinez, PTK-SMF Tampa
"Save my life before I die... that I might not perish from this earth a small and meaningless thing, without having touched greatness, without the siren call of destiny to guide me to something greater than myself; that my searching was not in vain but that I, in the end, walked with Titans."
"This is a great class. PTK is a combat system in FMA that focuses on close quarters combat. It is a practical system that is useful self defense system. Ferd is very patient, knowledgeable, and dedicated. I probably would not be in this group if it were not for Ferd's attitude towards teaching. The curriculum seems to be flexible, and Ferd is very open towards tailoring the teaching as long as it is true to PTK principles. Ferd is a great teacher, and this is a great class! "
- Alan P., Redwood City, CA.
"Excellent area, instructor and personnel... PTK-Peninsula group is very friendly and hard working and dedicated to PTK... excellent instructor and training."

"This evening I trained in a great PTK-SMF class at PTK-Peninsula with Ferd Terado. He showed up an hour early just so I could get in another hour of training before his class! I truly enjoyed training with you Ferd and have great respect for your teaching and intense passion for the system. Thank you for going out of your way to help an PTK-SMF drifter get in extra training! Train again soon."
- Adam B., St. Louis, MO.
Guru, Pencak Silat Pamonyet.
"Hi Ferd. I wanted to let you know that in the few training sessions that I've had, I've learned a lot more than I could have imagined... I've had the privilege of studying karate, hapkido, tai chi chuan and krav maga. I can honestly say that I have not, previously, had practical training that targeted the interaction between students armed with stick and knife as I have had with PTK-SMF. I am enjoying training immensely!"
- Derrick M., San Mateo, CA.
"... For any children reading this I am sorry for the next line... HOLY F#&K!! You guys are killing it so hard out there. I want to go party in the park with you guys so bad. Way to Represent, you guys never fail to impress. Your validation of the system is motivating sight and can't wait to see these videos continue. Onward upward SMF!"
- Stephen H., Dallas, TX.
Guro, PTK-SMF Dallas.
"Ferd's a great teacher. He takes time to make sure people understand each drill, and pushes them to do it. The system is no frills/ no BS FMA for real fighting.…"
- Joseph B., Mountainview, CA.
"You all might have read the terrible stories in the past month of joggers being murdered in broad daylight and knife mass attacks. I am of the belief that self-defense is an important life skill, with the same regard as personal finance.
Ever since being bullied in middle school, I've been on the search for self-defense classes and it wasn't until 2 years ago that I found a home at PTK-Peninsula. PTK stands for Pekiti Tirsia Kali, which is a "style" of Filipino martial arts which is the official combat art of the Philippines' Armed Forces.
What I like about it is that it is immediately actionable. From your first class you learn concepts that extends your life expectancy against someone who is or isn't armed. Unlike most martial arts, you start off learning how to use weapons and work your way to empty hand but everything is transferable whether or not you are armed with a firearm, blade, baton, or ballpoint pen. It's meant to be for combat survival, not sport.
So if anyone of you are interested in effective training for self-defense purposes, please reach out to my Guro Ferd Terado!"
