Magkatipunan in Tagalog means "to assemble," "congregate," "gather," or "converge."
This first gathering was organized in response to the overwhelming requests by the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali practitioners in the area, who have been wanting to get together as a large group for a day of full-contact sparring. However, no one was willing to step forward and organize such an event so I stepped up and offered to host the event one Sunday at my group's training location. After getting the "green light" from Tuhon Tim Waid, I pulled the trigger and invitations for the gathering went out to all interested parties... it was set for Sunday, October 14th 2012, which happened to be PTK-Peninsula's 1 year anniversary, so I figured what a perfect time to celebrate it with a day of sparring and if everyone flaked out, my students and I would simply keep training like normal - just about everyone we invited showed up and it turned out to be a great day! Since several people were representing their respective groups and I'm hosting this event at our training location, I coined the name Magkatipunan Sa PTK-Peninsula.
Haters Gonna Hate
It was a very successful first gathering and everyone who participated had nothing but positive things to say about the experience. However, there was a certain malicious and insecure individual who attempted to use this event as an excuse to ruin my reputation and sabotage our efforts to unite... Too bad for him it backfired. Now it's recognized not just by PTKGO, but by many of our other Filipino Martial Arts friends, some of whom participated and understood the purpose of this gathering.
Future Magkatipunan Events
I am relieved and proud to say that I got the full support and encouragement from Tuhon Tim Waid and everyone who had a positive experience to continue organizing future Magkatipunan events. We will gather annually under the auspices of camaraderie, unity, and to promote the PTK-SMF ideology... and everyone will know, it all began here at PTK-Peninsula!
