Tuhon Tim Waid has certified several Authorized PTKGO Instructors from the San Francisco Bay to the rank of Lakan Guro! The newly certified Lakan Guros of Northern California are:
Ferdinand Terado - PTK-Peninsula, San Mateo/Foster City CA.
Crisanto Aquino - Silicon Valley PTK, Santa Clara CA.
Randy Gonzalez - San Jose PTK, San Jose CA.
Jeff "Doc" Kaplan - San Lorenzo Valley PTK, Boulder Creek CA.
Lakan Guro or "apprentice instructor" is the first certification level at PTKGO, consistent with the traditional ranking structure of Pekiti-Tirsia Kali. This is a major milestone for the dedicated Authorized Instructors here in the San Francisco Bay to be awarded this honor by our head instructor Tuhon Tim Waid. This intense 3-Day Instructors-Only Workshop was conducted in March 22nd to 24th 2013, and covered the core competency materials required for instructors of all levels - we reviewed foundation skills, learned advanced drills and of course applied everything in technical and full-contact sparring. It was both physically and intellectually challenging for everyone who participated and some of us later learned that we were in fact being "tested" to be considered for certification.
I realize Tuhon Tim has been evaluating my progress ever since I made Authorized Instructor back in May 2011 and during the 10-Day Boracay Training Camp in the Philippines last year, but I didn't expect to be considered for my first certification this time around during the Instructors Camp at the PTKGO HQ. I sparred Tuhon Tim for a few fast-paced rounds, where he was really putting the pressure on me to execute some very specific tactics without getting hit by him in the process. I distinctly recall that he wouldn't dismiss me until I got it right that by the time he was done with me, I nearly vomited from exhaustion and nausea... Yeah, Tim was NOT messing around that time. Talk about earning it!
I'm happy to have survived that grueling test and got promoted on the last day of the workshop... of course shortly after the ceremony and a few congratulations from everyone, several people started calling out to "challenge" me to few rounds of full-contact sparring... I guess it was their way of keeping me in check and not to let my new promotion inflate my ego, hahaha! Good times.
I'm very proud of my NorCal PTK brothers. Congratulations to all the newly promoted PTKGO Lakan Guros! Let us continue to be the standard bearers of Tuhon Tim Waid and PTKGO here in NorCal!
